Review of Hotpoint RSG964J SMART+ Washing Machine

No, you haven’t stumbled onto the wrong blog, I’m first and foremost a parenting writer, but every now and again I review products that I believe help families (and preferably the environment too). Reviewing products, and accepting the odd advert and sponsored post from brands I consider to have a good match with me and my ethics, allows me to continue writing without having to find other work. I choose the products I review carefully and keep the more commercial posts to a minimum.  I hope that my reviews will be of interest and help to you.

So, I was lucky enough to be offered a Hotpoint RSG964J SMART+ Washing Machine to review at an incredibly fortuitous time.  My old washing machine, a measly 4kg load, was about to die and I was frankly sick of trying to wash six people’s clothing in a machine built for two people. This is what my washing pile looks like most days (no, I’m not even joking!):

As a family we have also been making a concerted effort to be more environmentally friendly recently. We do pretty well on waste. We keep ducks and chickens and as a result we never throw any food away. We recycle whatever we can, buy second hand where possible and avoid as many earth nasty chemicals in our cleaning products as possible. I’ve been lusting over an electric car for a good year now and hope that to get rid of our gas guzzler over the next couple of years. We also try to avoid using our central heating and burn as much scavenged wood as possible, the latter resulted in slashing £100 off of our gas bill last year. Despite this my little 4kg washing machine was often put to work three times every day. I had the distinct impression that this undid a lot of the good work we were putting in elsewhere.

The Hotpoint RSG964J SMART+ Washing Machine appealed not only for the massive load size (9kg), but also for the triple A energy rating and the ability to wash clothes, stain free, at 20 degrees centigrade. I must admit I am a complete technophobe and don’t understand most of the product specifics (HERE), but I am quite partial to aesthetics. We’ve just redecorated our kitchen and the space age machine sits in it quite attractively (as attractive as a washing machine can be, but you know what I mean!), pic below:

Having played with the machine for a couple of weeks I’m pretty impressed. I still don’t understand half of the functions and programmes, but I *think* I’ve been washing our clothes at 30 degrees and they definitely are coming out as clean as they did at 40 or even 50 in the old machine. The low temperatures amazingly also work really well with eco washing balls, rather than special biological powder. This is no mean feat considering I have four children between eight and fourteen who love nature (for ‘nature’ read ‘mud’)! The best thing is, I’m only doing one wash load per day now, which has got to be good for our electricity consumption.

So, in summary I’d recommend the Hotpoint RSG964J SMART+ Washing Machine. It has a super high capacity, is really energy efficient and is a pretty good price too. You can check it out HERE.
