How to Raise a Gentle Man

Raising a boy in today’s world can feel overwhelming.

Many parents are worried about the messages their sons are absorbing, the pressure to be tough or dominant, the pull of the manosphere and online incel culture, and the associated rise in misogyny and violence against women and girls.

Programmes like Netflix’s Adolescence has brought these fears even closer to home, highlighting how confusing and hostile the world can feel for young people trying to work out who they are.

Rates of suicide among teenage boys and young men remain frighteningly high, it’s the biggest killer in that age group.

Gentle boys sadly are often the ones who often struggle the most. Boys who are sensitive, emotionally open or simply uninterested in stereotypically masculine hobbies, fashion or behaviour can find themselves bullied, ridiculed or made to feel that there is something wrong with them.

Many parents are asking what they can do differently. Gentleness can be strength and I believe it’s the answer to change the current landscape.

My latest book ‘How to Raise a Gentle Man‘ offers a fresh take on raising boys.

It’s not about raising boys to be unprepared for the world. It’s not about demonising masculinity. It’s not about blaming testosterone or genetics. It’s about raising emotionally strong, kind and resilient boys who respect others and are able to withstand harmful narratives about masculinity. It speaks directly to the realities parents are facing now, from online influences to school culture, friendships, relationships and mental health.

This book is for parents of boys of all ages, whether you’re worrying about your toddler son, your primary school child’s place in the playground, or your teen’s safety and wellbeing as he navigates an increasingly complex world. It offers reassurance, insight and practical guidance grounded in compassion and evidence, not fear or outdated stereotypes.

it’s out on April 23rd. I’d love to see it on the shelf of every parent (and teacher!) raising a boy.
